CPD in the Environmental Services Industry

All about CPD requirements in the Environmental Services Industry

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a critical aspect of maintaining and enhancing the skills, knowledge, and competence of professionals in the Environmental Services sector. This industry includes a wide range of roles such as environmental consultants, ecologists, geologists, environmental engineers, and more. CPD ensures that individuals stay current with the latest developments, regulations, and best practices in environmental protection and

management. Here's a detailed overview of CPD requirements in the Environmental Services sector.

CPD activities in the environmental services industry may include attending conferences, workshops, seminars, webinars, and training programs related to environmental regulations, sustainability practices, pollution prevention, waste management, environmental impact assessment, and other relevant topics. Engaging in research, publishing articles, and participating in industry committees or working groups can also contribute to CPD.

Many environmental professionals belong to industry-specific associations or organizations that establish CPD requirements. These associations often outline the number of CPD hours or credits that professionals should accumulate within a specific time frame.

CPD is essential for professionals in the environmental services industry to stay proactive, engage in relevant CPD activities, and fulfill the requirements set by their professional associations or regulatory bodies to ensure continuous growth and development in their field.

The CPD Requirements

From The Professional Bodies, Associations, and Institutes for Practitioners in the Environmental Services Industry

CIEEM encourage members to raise the profile of professional ecological and environmental management and to promote the highest standards of practice for the benefit of nature and society. CIEEM has an online CPD tool where members can log and keep track of their ongoing learning. CIEEM expects members to undertake 30 hours of CPD annually, with at least 20 hours in structured learning.

All members must undertake CPD, with the exception of associate and retired members. The CIEH stipulates CPD hours and a competency framework for members to complete annually.

At IEMA there is a mandatory requirement to complete regular CPD hours for annual membership renewal. It’s good practice to plan and record CPD, so the IEMA requires members to keep a record and submit it once a year.
