CPD in the Science Industry

All about CPD requirements in the Science Industry

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is of paramount importance in the realm of Science. In the ever-evolving realm of Science, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the linchpin that propels professionals to the forefront of discovery and innovation. With breakthroughs occurring rapidly across diverse disciplines, scientists must actively engage in lifelong learning to remain at the cutting edge.

CPD accreditation in the Science industry has thus become a significant marker of excellence. CPD in the field of Science is a commitment to staying informed about the latest research methodologies, technological advancements, and emerging theories. It nurtures critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to new challenges.

Switching focus to the Science industry, CPD's importance doesn't waver. As science transcends boundaries, CPD enhances collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches. It enables scientists to connect dots between seemingly unrelated disciplines, leading to novel insights and solutions. From laboratories to research institutions, CPD empowers scientists to contribute to advancements that shape the future and address global challenges.

KEY TAKEAWAY

CPD is the driving force behind scientific progress. It equips professionals to embrace innovation, foster

interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuously contribute to breakthroughs that shape our understanding of the world.

The CPD Requirements

From The Professional Bodies, Associations, and Institutes for Practitioners in the Science Industry

STEERING BODY: THE SCIENCE COUNCIL

The Science Council has 37-member bodies. It has a standard called ‘Chartered Scientist (CSci)’ that many of these institutes offer as well as their own chartered status. Chartered Scientists are required to undertake CPD that benefits both the quality of their practice and their service users. No minimum hours are expected.

ROYAL SOCIETY OF BIOLOGY (RSB)

The Society's CPD scheme is points based and they specify a set number of points to achieve each year. As the professional body for biologists, they recognize that a diverse range of knowledge, skills and attributes are required by bio scientists working in numerous and varied professions. RSB also help to meet targets for annual progression by approving suitable events. 50 CPD points throughout the year, allocating between one and three points per hour depending on the activity.

INSTITUTE OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IFST)

There are no minimum hours stated, but IFST requires members to keep a record of CPD. Chartered Scientists are audited by the Membership Assessment Panel to ensure CPD standards are being maintained.

INSTITUTE OF BIO MEDICAL SCIENCE (IBMS)

IBMS provides members with a CPD scheme that offers a flexible system of recording CPD. The CPD scheme is entirely electronic, recording amending and validating of CPD are all carried out online.

Association for Perioperative Practice (AFPP)

AFPP undertake vital work to support theatre staff working in the NHS and private hospitals. Our goal is simple – to improve and enhance the safety of all patients who have operations in the UK. The AFPP provides an online CPD tool which helps to keep track and up to date.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF PATHOLOGISTS (RCPATH)

The College offers a CPD scheme which provides a framework by which pathologists maintain their knowledge and skills. The scheme provides access to an easy-to-use system for storing and cataloguing all the activities pathologists undertake to improve and enhance their practice, providing a tool for use for appraisals and in order to revalidate. Professionals must achieve 250 credits over a 5 year period, with a minimum of 50 credits per annum.

CPD Institute Logo

The Institute of CPD

As a pan-industry organisation, The Institute of CPD is open to professionals across all fields, and a home to those dedicated to demonstrating professional excellence. Depending on their membership level, a member of the Institute will commit to 10 or 30 hours of CPD per year.
